Nishikoi – Product & Packaging Design
Packaging Designed for a Specialist Product Range
Nishikoi is a specialist koi and aquatic brand with a range of products aimed at koi keepers and pond enthusiasts.
Juice Factory worked on the visual presentation and packaging of the Nishikoi product range, creating designs that needed to stand out while remaining consistent across multiple products.
The Challenge
A product range needs to be recognisable as a family while allowing individual products to communicate their own purpose.
For Nishikoi, the packaging needed to appeal to a knowledgeable specialist audience while making individual products easy to identify.
Packaging Design
Juice Factory developed packaging that created a consistent visual language across the range.
Typography, colour, imagery and information were carefully considered so that products could be recognised as part of the Nishikoi family while still retaining their own identity.
The first stage of the project was to create a range of design concepts, starting with an evolution of the existing designs onto more radical changes, all retaining the core brand values of Nishikoi, whilst cleaning up the overall look of the packs.
Designing for Retail
Packaging has an important role to play at the point of purchase.
Designs were created to provide strong shelf presence while ensuring that essential product information remained clear and easy to find.
The result was packaging that combined brand recognition with practical product communication.
Design Development
The packaging design process began with an evolution of Nishikoi’s existing packaging, retaining the core brand values and recognition while exploring a much more revolutionary visual approach. This initial creative direction went through a detailed period of design development, refining the visual language, hierarchy and product communication.
Once the preferred design direction had been established, it was rolled out across the 12 core products to evaluate the range as a whole. This stage was particularly important in testing product differentiation, ensuring that each product could be clearly identified while still working as part of one cohesive Nishikoi family. Following this evaluation, the approved design was further adapted across the different pack sizes, pellet formats and product variations, creating a consistent and flexible packaging system for the complete range.
Packaging Artwork Production
One of the biggest challenges of the Nishikoi project was managing the sheer complexity of the artwork production. Juice Factory developed and controlled 98 individual pack artworks, covering 12 different products, seven pack sizes from 350g to 10kg and three pellet sizes — Small, Medium and Large.
Each variation required its own accurate combination of product information, ingredients, barcode, product code and pack specifications, while maintaining complete visual consistency across the range.
Jasper managed the artwork production and version control throughout the project, carefully coordinating the numerous variations and checking every element before release to print. This ensured that the large volume of artwork remained accurate, consistent and production-ready across the entire range.
With 98 individual artworks to manage, this was the largest and one of the most production-intensive packaging design projects undertaken by Juice Factory Design.
